何かと比較して「大したことはない」
こんな感じの表現が必要な状況って日常会話の中でも結構多いのではないでしょうか？
be nothing compared to (with)~(something/someone)
〜に比べれば、〜など何でもない、取るに足りない、比べ物にならない
EX1.This is nothing compared to what we had gone through in the great depression.
これは我々が大恐慌の時に経験したことと比べたら何でもない。
EX2.The Thai restaurant we went to last week was fairly good.
But it’s still nothing compared to those in Thailand.
先週行ったタイ料理のお店は中々よかったね。けど本場のタイで食べる料理には全然かなわないよ。
EX3. A:Wow, so many people in the line!
B:This is nothing compared to the last week.
A:うわー、すごい沢山の人が並んでるよ！
B:先週に比べたら全然大したことないよ。
何かを引き合いに出して比較する時に便利なフレーズ
~is nothing
〜は何でもない
~compared to で〜と比べると「無」、全然大したことない。
こんな風に捉えると意味は割とイメージしやすいのではないでしょうか？
EX4.The history of mankind is nothing compared to the one of the universe. It is just like a moment.
人類の歴史なんて宇宙の歴史と比べたらちっぽけなもんだよ。まるで一瞬みたいなものさ。
EX5. A:How could you play that difficult phrase?
B:It’s not that difficult.It is nothing compared to stairway to heaven.
A:よくそんな難しいフレーズ弾けるな！
B:これはそんなに難しくないよ。天国への階段と比べたら訳ないさ！
nothing compared to~は日常会話の中でもとても役立ちそうですね。覚えておいて必要な時にスッと出るようになれば、会話もより盛り上がりそうです。
「~と比べたら全然大したことないよ。」文脈と状況によっては自慢的なニュアンスと取られてしまわないように要注意ではありますが…。(笑)
